320 sixth graders from Round Lake Middle School to visit CLC for STEM Day

On Friday, Dec. 1, the entire sixth grade class from Round Lake Middle School in Round Lake Heights will visit CLC for a day of hands-on learning about CLC's educational programs that support future careers within STEM.

"This is the third consecutive year for this program, and each one has been very successful," said Daniel Roldan, science/social studies teacher, Round Lake Middle School. "More than 300 sixth graders will gain hands-on learning experiences in exciting STEM fields at CLC."

Students will be placed into teams and will rotate through a variety of programs, all offering hands-on learning experiences for students. Some of the 15 programs being highlighted include Biology, Nursing, Robotics, Geology, Automotive, Computer Science and Horticulture.

"The College of Lake County is pleased to again offer this learning experience for students of Round Lake Middle School," said Christian Roldan-Johnson, associate dean of Engineering, Math and Physical Sciences at CLC. "A group of dedicated professors have volunteered to provide presentations and demonstrations in their area of expertise. We greatly appreciate the devotion they have for their field and also to assisting young people in developing a plan for their future."

Round Lake Area Schools CUSD #116 opened a newly renovated high school last year, which offers a variety of courses supporting engineering. Students at the middle schools are also benefiting from a brand new Gateway engineering program. This trip will help to continue to foster and enhance the importance and significance of considering a STEM-related field in the future.

"The ultimate goal of this learning experience is to enhance the students' knowledge of the vast array of opportunities available within STEM fields. By exposing them to these fields early on, they may be more likely to seek STEM-related courses in middle school, high school, college and eventually a career," said Roldan-Johnson.
