Salata presents $550 check to District 21

After a successful month of fundraising through Salata's inaugural "Salata Salutes" give back program, Salata owner Dan Campbell presented a check to Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 Superintendent Kate Hyland for the district's Katie Samsel Fund.

"Salata Salutes" is a monthly initiative to give back to the community by raising money for local nonprofits.

These monies will support the Katie Samsel Fund, a fund used to meet student and family needs as they arise. This fund was recently depleted after supporting families after the recent summer flooding.

The donation from Salata helped restore funds to continue to support families in these emergency situations, or just helping to cover costs for items like eyeglasses, school supplies, and more.

Katie Samsel was the principal of Whitman Elementary School. When she died in 1974, a memorial fund was created by her family with the purpose of helping District 21 students and their families in an emergency or hardship situation.

The function of the fund has varied, from providing eyeglasses to students in need, to helping families that were displaced from their homes due to fire or flood. The fund affords flexibility to meet student and family needs in the most appropriate way and at the most appropriate time.
