Embrace traditions at Christmas in the Valley in Schaumburg

Experience what the holidays might have been like before the modern-day hustle and bustle.

Schaumburg Park District's Christmas in the Valley is noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 and Sunday, Dec. 3, at Merkle Cabin and Volkening Heritage Farm.

"This is always such a nice event because it presents the holidays from a different perspective," said Dave Brooks, manager of Spring Valley. "You get to see how people celebrated the holidays in the 19th century. There was probably still gift giving and some of the angst that goes along with the holidays today, but a lot of gifts were homespun."

Visitors will meet a traditional St. Nicholas, sample foods, have the opportunity to buy homemade gifts and see farm chores completed. Also featured will be cookie decorating and crafts for kids. Hot drinks and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Cost is $3 per person or $12 per family of six or fewer. Additional family members are $3 each. Children age 3 and younger are free.

Parking is available at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. Shuttle bus transportation to the farm will be available.
