Reindeer Run 5K supports charities, history

The weather outside may be frightful, but the annual Lions Club Reindeer Run will be so delightful.

The sixth annual run to bring holiday spirit to the Wheaton community starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in the city's downtown.

"Since our partnership with the Wheaton Park District began, our goal of creating and fostering a spirit of understanding among the Wheaton community has been given even more of an opportunity," said RC Crompton, Lions Club Reindeer Run committee lead.

"The annual Reindeer Run 5K race for charity has been a tremendous help to those with sight, hearing and diabetic disabilities."

The race begins and ends at the DuPage County Historical Museum, 102 E. Wesley St., which also will receive a portion of the proceeds.

The museum preserves the history of DuPage County and its residents through free admission, year-round programming and exhibits such as "1917: Catalyst for the Modern Era," which runs through July 2018.

The 5K is a Chicago Area Runners Association-certified race for all ages. A long-sleeve tech shirt and antlers is provided to the first 1,250 runners by Wheaton Park District.

"Not only do we encourage this as an all-ages and family event, we also encourage everyone to show their holiday spirit with festival attire," said Kristina Nemetz, Wheaton Park District's superintendent of marketing and special events.

"Come out in your ugliest sweaters or best Santa costumes. We'll provide the fun and excitement that comes with a Race Wheaton event."

Individual sign up is $35 through Tuesday, Nov. 28, and teams of four or more are $30.

Packet pickup will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Wheaton Park District Community Center, 1777 S. Blanchard Road. Registration is available during packet pickup and race day for $40 if entry is still available.
