Although not typically on women's radar, heart disease poses a serious threat to their health--and a local physician is coming to Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Northbrook to talk about it on Wednesday, December 6th.

Dr. Cathie Dunal's free presentation, "Her Heart: Practical Ways to Reduce Women's Cardiovascular Risk," begins at 7 p.m. at the club, 1300 Techny Road.

Dunal will delve into cardiovascular risk in women--from the symptoms to lifestyle changes and other interventions that women can take to minimize their chance of developing heart disease. Those include adding more plant protein to your meals by subtracting some meat from your diet, seeing your dentist at least twice a year for cleanings, and standing up for a little while after you've been sitting for a half hour.

The one-hour session, which will include a question-and-answer period, is free and open to the public.

Strokes, vascular disease and arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) are "surprisingly common" in women who are far from old age, according to Dunal.

"Many women have been lulled into complacency about heart health--assuming they're immune to cardiovascular problems because they're a woman, and not elderly," said Dunal.

"This just isn't true. I've encountered women who, despite appearing healthy, have had a heart attack in their 50s."

Practicing under the preventive medicine/family practice umbrella, Dunal has become well respected in her field of family practice and integrative medicine and is considered by many to be an expert diagnostician.

Her Northbrook-based practice, More Than Medicine MD, has developed a reputation as an accessible, comforting and friendly health resource for those looking to optimize their well-being.
