St. Charles Kiwanis offer three grants to local nonprofits

The St. Charles Kiwanis Club awarded three grants for the month of October to area organizations that assist children and families. Shelter Assistance received a $1,500 grant and both CASA Kane County and AID received $1,000 grants.

Kiwanis Clubs regularly award grants to area organizations in need.

Jim Bone, a board member with Shelter Assistance, accepted a $1,500 grant for the all-volunteer nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization. Its mission is to help prevent homelessness by bringing hope and financial aid to those temporarily in need of assistance with their rent or mortgage in St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia. They work closely with the Salvation Army-Tri-City Corps, St. Vincent DePaul Society and Lazarus House. Visit www.shelterassistance.org.

Kathleen Davine, a volunteer with CASA Kane County, accepted the $1,000 grant. CASA Kane County is a nonprofit volunteer organization that has been advocating for the best interests of abused and neglected children within the juvenile court system since 1988. CASA Kane County recruits, trains, and supervises community volunteers who serve as court appointed special advocates and guardians ad litem (CASA/GAL) for children who are in court due to abuse, neglect or private guardianship. The goal is to ensure that every child is placed in a safe and permanent home allowing them the chance to reach their full potential in life. Visit www.casakanecounty.org.

Christie Plotzke, grants specialist for the Association for Individual Development-Elgin branch, accepted the $1,000 grant for the nonprofit which empowers people with physical, developmental, intellectual and mental health challenges to enjoy lives of dignity and purpose. It has offices in Aurora, Batavia, Elgin, McHenry, St. Charles, Sugar Grove and Yorkville. Visit www.the-association.org.

The St. Charles Kiwanis Club meets at noon Tuesdays at the Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave. in St. Charles.
