Drones are taking over St.Gilbert School

St.Gilbert School Technology Director Mrs. Lisa Kleber has just released a new Drone Flying Club during the 2017-2018 school year that is open to 6th through 8th graders after school.

Mrs. Kleber has some help from her husband, Mr.Kleber and 7th and 8th Honors and Regular Math and Science teacher, Dr. Rickert. The club members learn what the principles of flying are and learn how to fly a remote control drone.

"Students get a hands-on experience with the drones by flying and racing them," says Mrs. Kleber.

"It's fun to fly them around," Josh Young says.

The students also use Virtual Reality to fly the drones around. The club members use iPods that are connected to the drone to use the Virtual Reality program. " it really seems like you are the drone," says club member AJ Miller

One of the clubs activities is to race drones through an obstacle course.

"It is quite hard to fly through the obstacle course because you can't go with the drone, you have to stay put and stand where you started," stateĀ“s club member Michael Gargiulo.

The club members also learn the basic controls of the drone and learn how to hover, move forward and backward, and learn how to do tricks like flips and other things.

" The drones are helping students learn control and visual angles of flight," Dr. Rickert states. The drone club is a great new way to learn math and science.
