The Salvation Army, Spectrios Institute to offer free exams, glasses Oct. 27

The Salvation Army Elgin Corps, one of the largest direct providers of basic human needs in northern Kane County, and Spectrios Institute for Low Vision in Wheaton is partnering to provide free comprehensive vision exams and eye glasses at a low cost for at-risk, low-income residents of Kane County.

Low-income individuals are at an increased risk for diabetes and diabetic eye disease.

Many low-income diabetics cannot afford vision care, which puts them at high risk for developing diabetic retinopathy, which leads to permanent vision loss.

Spectrios Institute provides comprehensive dilated exams to low-income and at-risk individuals as a way to provide education and basic preventative care. For more information, www.spectrios.org.

Registration is required.

It will be 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at The Salvation Army, 316 S. Douglas Ave. in Elgin. Bilingual available.

For registration, contact Melissa Potrawski at (847) 741-2304, ext. 303; there are limited spots.

The exam is free exam; glasses are $25-$30 for qualified, preregistered individuals.

Funding for the Kane County mobile vision clinic is made possible through a generous grant from the Dunham Fund. For more information about the Dunham Fund Foundation, visit www.dunhamfund.org.
