Halloween decorations, candy can be dangerous for felines

Fall is a fun time of year for adult activities like apple and pumpkin picking, and perhaps new memories of children romping in leaves and hay.

It is certainly a happy time to delight in all the fall colors and the colorful decorations.

While we are enjoying the change in season, let us not forget that this is a horrid season for all black cats and kittens. The end of September saw the last of the black feline adoptions for now unless you have previously adopted from us. I invite you to check out all of our black beauties after Halloween.

Halloween even poses a threat to our inside felines if we are not careful with our decorative choices. Orange lights and spider web-like decorations are deadly if ingested. If you think you are safe with ceramic or blown-glass pumpkins, think again. I see glass cuts on tiny paws when your feline shoves the decorations off the mantle.

Candy is a culprit all on its own. The only safe candy is locked in a cabinet or in a bowl outside.

My felines are as crafty as they come. In a multiple-cat household, what one cat can't figure out, the next one in line is willing to teach. With that said, I have opted out of the inside decorations and have gone crazy on the outside. That is my best suggestion to all of the households that have multiple felines.

Anyone who has been by the Buddy Foundation building lately knows we are decked out for the fall holidays to welcome our guests and adopters. We have decorated our entryway and lobby with the colors of the season.

So, if you do not feel like decorating, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to enjoy ours, and enjoy some of the fundraisers we will be having at the shelter.

Halloween photos

On Saturday, Oct. 28, we will have family Halloween photos with "Wanda, the good witch," from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year will be the most fun yet, as there will be prizes for best big dog, small dog and cat costumes. All children in costume will be given special. treats and surprises.

Every year it is our goal to make this festive time of year bigger and better for everyone that helps animals and attends our fundraisers. Next year promises to include a pet and family costume parade.

Bowling For Buddy

On Nov. 5 from 1:30-4:30 p.m., we are having a bowling event as a fundraiser. The event will occur at Arlington Lanes, 3435 Kennicott Ave. in Arlington Heights. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. The donation includes the price of bowling and an all-you-can-eat buffet. Raffle and auction prizes will also be available. Contact our shelter for more details, or stop by for your tickets.

Glory is a petite, female tabby, around 3-5 years. She has been at the shelter for several years along with her sibling, Maris. She's very shy so it takes a while to get to know her, but once you do she will gladly accept treats from your hand and may even let you pet her. She has really soft fur and one of the sweetest little meows you will ever hear. Courtesy of the Buddy Foundation
