Signal Hill, NSDAR, begins chapter year with history lesson

The Barrington area Signal Hill Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution recently held its first meeting of the chapter year.

Items reviewed during the business meeting included recognition of Constitution Week, with various readings, quotations and a trivia contest about aspects of the U.S. Constitution.

In addition, committee reports were given regarding the ongoing annual essay contest for fifth- through eighth-graders in the area and a reminder of the upcoming free genealogy workshop at the Barrington White House on Oct. 28.

After induction of two new members, bringing chapter membership totals to well over 100 women, attendees were treated to a history lesson by associate professor David Richmond from Harper College. His topic was about exploration by European nations in the New World from 1400-1600.

It was a lively lecture with audience participation about multiple aspects of the topic.

Newly elected Chapter Regent Deb Edlund and First Vice Regent Ann Wilkerson have planned equally interesting speakers and topics for the remainder of the chapter year, ending in May, 2018.

Signal Hill raises funds throughout the year and distributes to 501 (c) (3) organizations, who support DAR's mission of education, historic preservation, patriotism, conservation, and Native American issues.

The chapter was founded in 1972, and is dedicated to preserving history, promoting patriotism, conservation and historic awareness in our community, and securing America's future through better education for children.

Membership is established through approval of documentation of direct lineage from an American Revolutionary War Patriot.
