Historical society to present 'The War to End All Wars' Oct. 22

On Sunday, Oct. 22, the Dundee Township Historical Society will present a special program, "The War to End All Wars" from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Tri-City Evergreen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2298, 117 S. First St. in West Dundee.

"The War to End All Wars" is the story of the men from Dundee, Carpentersville, Elgin, Algonquin and the surrounding area who served in Company E 129th Infantry of the U.S. Army.

Their story was told in the little book "Hard Tack and Bullets," written by Corporal Henry J. Hines. Within the pages of this book there are stories of horror, pain, courage and respect. It is real, it is inspirational, it is unforgettable. Dundee area residents Joe Falese, Fred Wendt and Harry Pitschow were three soldiers who served in Company E 129th Infantry. Caroline Steinwart, another Dundee resident, also served in the war as a Red Cross nurse. Company E left for France on May 25, 1918. They sailed to France from New Jersey on a transport ship with 6,000 other soldiers. World War I battles killed 15 Dundee Township residents and injured scores of others from the Northern Fox Valley.
