Waukegan Church to Mark a Major Milestone

The Oct. 22 worship service at First United Methodist Church in Waukegan will be a celebration of the sanctuary's 100th anniversary at the corner of Clayton St. and Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave. The present brick structure, which opened in 1917, replaced a wooden church that had served Methodist congregations at that same location since 1849.

"This beautiful worship space is now more than 100 years old and is a testament to the commitment of countless persons over the years to build on the legacy of those who went before them," says the Rev. Dr. Cecelia Harris, First United Methodist Church pastor. "We are a stronger and more vibrant church because of the vast array of persons who have contributed to our history."

The centennial celebration begins with the 10 a.m. worship service, featuring music from all of the church's adult and youth choirs, followed by a luncheon in Fellowship Hall. And there'll be lots of historic memorabilia on display. Interested community members are invited to join the congregation in celebrating this milestone in downtown Waukegan. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP, by Oct. 15 if possible, to 847-623-2433 or fumc1@sbcglobal.net.

"Through the years, the congregation and its pastors have been active in serving the Waukegan community," notes church historian Doug Stiles. "In 1861, they promoted the abolition of slavery and service in the Civil War. During the 1870s, they supported the Temperance Movement. In the 20th century, they prepared over 90 young men to fight in France in 1917 - and an even greater number in 1941."

Stiles adds that in 1956, plans were developed for an education wing and a chapel. The cornerstone for this addition to the 1917 church building was laid in 1958. Other building improvements include handicapped accessibility; a new organ, which was purchased in 1997; and the addition of a columbarium, which was dedicated in 1993.

And for more than 30 years, the church has opened its doors every Tuesday night to provide a free meal for those in need. Its congregation supports mission projects locally, nationally and around the world.
