'Something Wicked' returns to Side Street Studio Arts Oct. 6

Side Street Studio Arts, 15 Ziegler Court in downtown Elgin, will be host to a monthlong series of events in conjunction with their October exhibition "Something Wicked."

The fifth annual exhibition, developed in conjunction with Elgin artists John LaFleur and David Metzter, received a record number of submissions this year. It will feature the work of over 40 individual artists. The exhibition kicks off with the First Friday opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6. It will feature live music from Phantoms & Pestilence. The event is open to the public and there is a $5 suggested donation at the door.

"Since opening in 2013, 'Something Wicked' has been one of our most success events," said SSSA founder and director Erin Rehberg. "The spooky fun of the visual art and the engaging performers, combined with the brewing energy of downtown Elgin in October, leading up to Nightmare on Chicago Street, makes the whole month such a wonderfully wicked time."

The 2017 "Something Wicked" artists include: ARTCULTURES, BaM!, Crystal Beiersdorfer, Jeffrey Berner, David Bremer, Andres A. Chavez, Bret Elsenbroek, Anitra Frazier, John French, Katie Gregory, Brianna Lynn Hernandez Baurichter, Jayma Forman, Carrie Gant and Portia Clinique, Frances Hernandez, Moses Irizarry, Karl Jahnke, David Krajecki, Roberta Z. Marco, Thomas R. Martin, Elias Martinez, Maureena Miller, Brett Mich, Jacob Montoya, Jamie Neely, Laura Ozarow, Chris Palm, Christopher Pender, Stephen Schreiner, Phil Seifritz, Ken Simonsen, Joyce Symoniak, Steven Tritt, Alyssa Ward, Kimberly Witz, and more.

Side Street Studio Arts was founded by Tanner Melvin and Rehberg in 2013 as an outlet for the Elgin arts scene. Currently under the direction of Amanda Harris, Roberto Martinez, Melvin, and Rehberg, Side Street provides educational and creative resources and an accessible space, run by artists. Side Street's mission is to support the artist and artistic journey through collaboration.

"Something Wicked" gallery hours are: noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday to Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday; or by appointment.

The monthlong program continues with "Skeletunes!," featuring loud and local live music with Evening Glow, Lettering, Water Dog, and Sloth Hands, at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Next Door Theater, 15 1/2 Ziegler Court. There is a $5 suggested donation.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, the Chicago Burlesque Showcase presents MsPixy's Big Spooky Party! at 10 p.m. at Next Door Theater. There is a $20 suggested donation. The fantastic Chicago Burlesque Showcase, led by MsPixy Productions, has made Side Street Studio Arts a hub for the best the Chicago burlesque scene has to offer for three years! MsPixy and her pal Giant Martini return to Side Street Studio Arts for MsPixy's Big Spooky Party!

On Thursday, Oct. 26, Watch City presents "Halloween Costume Party 2017" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at Next Door Theater. There is a $5 suggested donation. It's been a while since Watch City last threw a Halloween party, so they decided to come back with a bang this year. Join them for live performances, a costume contest with prizes from Watch City, Side Street Studio Arts, and more!

There will be live performances from: Moore, Angrous, Sleepless, Snailmate, and Security Culture, with special guest Adam Gottlieb.
