Folk legend Arlo Guthrie performs at ECC Arts Center

Folk legend Arlo Guthrie will perform with his children, musicians Abe and Sarah Lee Guthrie, at the Elgin Community College Arts Center Friday, Oct. 13, as part of his Re:Generation Tour.

The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the ECC Arts Center's Blizzard Theatre in Building H on ECC's campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Arlo Guthrie's father, acclaimed American folk pioneer Woody Guthrie, hoped to one day have enough kids to form a family band that would travel the country singing their songs together. The Re:Generation Tour honors that hope.

Joined by his children, Arlo Guthrie will present the music of generations of Guthries in a concert that celebrates the legacy of a revered American folk music family. In addition to his accomplishments as a musician, which include playing the piano, the six and 12-string guitar, harmonica, and a dozen other instruments, Arlo Guthrie is a storyteller.

Arlo Guthrie was born in New York in 1947 with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other. He is the eldest son of Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease.

Arlo Guthrie grew up surrounded by musicians and dancers, and frequented the most famous venues of the "Folk Boom" era, including Gerdes Folk City, The Gaslight, and The Bitter End.

Guthrie's career exploded in 1967 with the release of "Alice's Restaurant." The album's title song premiered at the Newport Folk Festival and helped foster a new commitment among the '60s generation to social consciousness and activism.

Arlo Guthrie went on to star in the 1969 film version of "Alice's Restaurant," and record additional hits, including "Coming into Los Angeles" and the definitive rendition of Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans."

Over the last four decades, Guthrie has toured throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. In addition to his performing career, Guthrie launched his own record label, Rising Son Records, in 1983.

Tickets to Arlo Guthrie are $47-$64. Tickets for all performances at the ECC Arts Center are available online at tickets.elgin.edu or at the ECC Arts Center box office. To purchase tickets by phone, call (847) 622-0300.
