Energy assistance programs available to Wheeling Township residents

Wheeling Township residents who are seniors age 60 and older, and those receiving Social Security Disability and SSI benefits are now able to schedule appointments for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

The LIHEAP program provides financial assistance for income-qualified families to cover the cost of heating bills. Assistance comes in the form of a grant payment made directly to the utility company for those in danger of being without heat during the winter months. Priority periods are:

• Oct. 1: The priority period begins for seniors, and the disabled receiving Social Security Disability and SSI benefits.

• Nov. 2: The priority period begins for households with one or more disconnected utilities, and that have children ages 5 and under.

• Dec. 1: All low-income households in Wheeling Township are eligible to apply for LIHEAP.

Required documentation includes: Proof of current 30-day gross income of all household members; a copy of the most recent heat and electric bills; proof of Social Security numbers for all household members; and if applicants are renting and utilities are included in the rent-the rental agreement that states utilities are included in the rent, and landlord contact information.

Furnace assistance is also available for homeowners [renters are not eligible] who are approved for LIHEAP, and who have heating systems that are not operational or have been red-tagged by their utility company. Income guidelines for 2017-2018 are as follows:

• One person household: $1,508 gross income for 30 day prior to application date

• Two person household: $2.030 gross income for 30 day prior to application date
