Programs at library offer tips on paying for college

College. If the word conjures images of depleted bank accounts, endless paperwork, stress over scholarships and fears about your child living away from home, take a deep breath and read on.

Having been through it, I can tell you that information is the key to saving money and having a sense of peace … or, at least, a lot less stress.

The librarians at the Schaumburg Library know all about the need for college information, and have planned college prep programs on all the topics of interest to perspective college students and their parents.

My advice? Go. Bring a notebook. Take full advantage of this opportunity to hear from experts and get facts that will help you save money, make informed decisions, improve the chances for scholarships and acceptance into various colleges and universities.

Learn about options for paying for college and whether it's best to start with a community college, jump right into a four-year university, or consider a trade school. All of the October and November College Prep programs are free and take place at the Central Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg.

The library's upcoming College Prep programs kick off with "College 101" from 7-7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the library's Rasmussen South Room. A representative from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission will talk about various options, college visits, types of colleges, career options and criteria to consider when selecting a college and major.

Coming up next is "College Application: Case Studies" from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Adult Classroom. In this program, a representative from C2 Education will show samples of college applications and describe what the forms require, as well as explain ways for students to highlight their strengths. This program will provide tips for getting admitted to top colleges.

Our third program is "The College Admissions Process" from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the Adult Classroom. Thomas J. Jaworski of Quest College Consulting will provide insight on which application deadline is best, how many a student should complete, and how to begin the process.

Let's talk money. Specifically, free money, as in scholarships. For many parents and students, a scholarship makes or breaks the deal when it comes to attending college. For others, it has a big impact on whether student loans are needed.

By attending "The Importance and Impact of Scholarships" from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, parents and students will learn about the different types of scholarships and how colleges and universities select recipients. A presenter from the Heartland Institute of Financial Education will also provide tips for the best ways to keep track of scholarship applications.

Many parents and students alike cringe at the thought of starting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Come to "Completing the FAFSA" for helpful suggestions on starting the process from members of the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. This program takes place from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25.

Still concerned about affording a college education? Come to "College Funding" from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9. A presenter from HIFE will outline various financial options for working within specific goals and capabilities.

Remember, all of the above programs are free, but they do require registration. To register, call (847) 923- 3240 or go online to www.SchaumburgLibrary.org/events.
