Knee Pain A Common Orthopedic Complaint

My aching knees - a topic that drew a crowd of both young and older attendees to a lecture recently held at Cook Memorial Library in Libertyville. During a "Lunch and Learn" session featuring Zachary Domont, M.D., a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Advocate Medical Group Orthopedics, various causes of knee pain - both acute and chronic - were discussed.

"Knee pain is one of the most common reasons for patients to come to my office," Dr. Domont explained. "There are many different causes for knee pain and thus multiple different options for treatment. While I specialize in sports injuries that affect the knee in both kids and adults, I have trained to treat the whole spectrum of knee injuries from kneecap pain to ligament injuries to arthritis," he added.

Dr. Domont, who has a specialty interest in repairing and preserving knee cartilage before the need for knee replacement, explained that there are a variety of both conservative therapies and surgeries to address knee pain. As one of only a few surgeons in Lake County to provide state-of-the-art cartilage restoration techniques usually found at academic medical centers downtown in Chicago, Dr. Domont is able to help athletes - both recreational and high-performance - return to the level they were at before their injury.

"Advancements in imaging as well as surgical techniques in orthopedic surgery have allowed me to treat previously-untreatable complex knee problems in a minimally-invasive way to hopefully preserve the native knee for a longer period of time," he said." Arthroscopic surgery (surgery performed with a camera through small incision) further helps dramatically reduce the period of recovery. Dr. Domont added that conservative measures, such as medications, physical therapy, bracing and injections are utilized before recommending surgery. "I like my patients to feel like they have exhausted all nonsurgical measures before we have a conversation about surgery," he said. "The most satisfying part of my job is seeing my patients return to an activity level that makes them happy and healthy."
