Dogs have their day at Poochapalooza

Hundreds of dog lovers will come together today at Glen Ellyn Park District's annual Poochapalooza to celebrate the joy "man's best friend" brings to their lives.

Poochapalooza will feature a vendor expo, dog-friendly games, contests and an off-leash area from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept 23, at the Spring Avenue Dog Park, 185 Spring Ave., Glen Ellyn. Admission is free.

"The first 200 pooches to arrive will receive a goodie-filled VIP (Very Important Pooch) bag," said Jen Saylor, recreation assistant for the Glen Ellyn Park District. "We'll also host a pet costume contest and a tennis ball raffle, and the dogs will have a chance to enjoy an off-leash play area. A police K-9 unit will also visit for the first hour of the event."

Dog owners usually need a permit to use the dog park with their pooch.

"On this special day, we waive the permit requirement so anybody can attend," Saylor said. "All dogs must remain on a leash in the park, however, unless they're inside the designated off-leash area."

The Glen Ellyn Park District works with local businesses that offer pet-related services and products to plan and execute the afternoon for dogs and their owners. The event is for anyone who owns, fosters or just loves dogs.
