Elgin Riverside Club names Greg Shannon as 2017 Man of the Year

The Elgin Riverside Club "Man of the Year Committee" has selected Greg Shannon as their 2017 Man of the Year.

Shannon was selected for his selfless donation of time and expertise with special events. He has sponsored wine and whiskey pairings to the benefit of the Club for Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day and other occasions. He has donated special dinners and cook nights which included the 125th anniversary dinner.

Shannon is always open to giving advice when called upon and training volunteers to make special dishes for various events. He volunteers his assistance without being asked and always has the good of the club at heart. He is one of the annual golf outing sponsors and donates prizes awarded at that event.

Shannon was born in Hamilton Ohio and moved to Elgin when he was 6 years old. He began working in restaurants when he was 15 years old. He and his wife, Lou, have owned and operated the Elgin Public House for the past 11 years. He also operates the Grumpy Goat Tavern at the Highlands Golf Course.

Shannon is also active in the community. He sponsors an annual golf outing benefiting the Food for Great Elgin as well as donating to other local organizations. He is also an active supporter of Nightmare on Chicago Street, the annual Halloween event in downtown Elgin.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, the club will host a celebratory dinner for friends, family and club members to honor Greg for his accomplishments.
