Sept. 22: Award-winning Sones de México Ensemble performs at CLC

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by enjoying Chicago's premiere Mexican folk music organization, Sones de México Ensemble, as it returns to the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22 as part of the 21st Professional Touring Series.

A Grammy® and Latin Grammy® Award nominee, Sones de México Ensemble has been dedicated to artistic excellence and quality education since 1994. The ensemble specializes in the various regional styles of son, re-creating the atmosphere of a traditional fandango (dance fiesta) and has developed and popularized many original arrangements of Mexican traditional tunes.

The group will present authentic music and storytelling that highlights the performers' unique artistry and colorful heritage. The musicians perform with over 40 Mexican folk instruments, interweaving song, dance, story and improvisation to create a rich, cross-cultural banquet of regional music.

Some of Sones de México Ensemble's original work has experimented cross-culturally with symphonic, Irish, folk, County and Western, jazz and rock music, though never abandoning its roots in Mexican son. The performance features string, percussion and wind instruments; bright, three-part vocal arrangements; and acrobatic dance demonstrations. The group has released six CDs, including the Grammy-nominated "Esta Tierra Es Tuya" (This Land is Your Land) and "Fiesta Mexicana" (a children's album). Performer website: http://sonesdemexico.com.

"Beyond the Music: A Musical Geography of México," a free lecture/demo of Mexican music with Sones de México Ensemble, will be presented prior to the performance, followed by a pre-show mingle in the JLC Studio Theatre lobby with food/concession sales. This program is sponsored in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tickets: The performance will be held in the Studio Theatre with no reserved seating. Tickets are $35 for adults, $34 for seniors/CLC staff and alumni; CLC students and teens age 12-17 are $15; and children are $10. Prices do not include a $2 per ticket JLC facility fee and other applicable fees.
