College of DuPage to Host 'Writing on the Edge' Conference Oct. 7

College of DuPage will host the third annual "Writing on the Edge: Connecting Across the Divide" from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, in the Student Resource Center, Room 2000, on the College's main campus, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn. This conference is open to all writing instructors, adjunct or full time, as well as administrators, high school teachers, staff members and other individuals who would benefit from the material provided.

Organized by the adjunct lecturers in the English and ELS programs at COD and sponsored by McGraw Hill Education, "Writing on the Edge" will bring together English and ESL adjunct faculty engaged in the teaching of writing across platforms for information sharing and networking. Sessions will focus on the work of adjuncts to further composition pedagogy and address topics in multimodal literacy, technology in the classroom, positive student engagement, writing across the curriculum, and enhanced professional practice.

The keynote address, "Serving Students' Needs in Digital Environments," will be delivered by Duane Roen, a professor of English at Arizona State University where he serves as dean of the College of Letters and Sciences, dean of University College, vice provost, and coordinator for the Project for Writing and Recording Family History. In addition to more than 280 articles, chapters, and conference presentations, Roen has published several books, including "The McGraw-Hill Guide: Writing for College, Writing for Life," "Becoming Expert: Writing and Learning Across the Disciplines," "Richness in Writing: Empowering ESL Students," "Strategies for Teaching First-Year Composition" and "The Writer's Toolbox."

A pre-conference workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6. Presented by Roen and Lynda Haas from the University of California-Irvine, this workshop will focus on developing and using portfolios in the classroom and teaching online classes.
