Mount Prospect Woman's Club Awards 2017 Scholarships

The Mount Prospect Woman's Club recently awarded three $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors from the proceeds of their "1917: A Fashion Retrospective" Luncheon & Fashion Show event held in May at The Cotillion in Palatine. Congratulations to this year's recipients!

Lorelei Junkel is a Hersey High School graduate who will attend Illinois State University to study music education. Lorelei wants to be a music educator because she loves music and wants to share it with everybody so they too can have an appreciation for music, whether they stick with it or not. Through teaching music, Lorelei wants to help kids express their feelings. Lorelei was very active with the music program at Hersey High School, where she was the trumpet section leader for concert band, marching band and jazz band, and was a member of Jazz Ensemble, Brass Quintets, Pep Band and "Ladies First" Show Choir. She was also in the District #214 Honors Band for two years. Lorelei is active in her church where she was President of the Youth Group for two years, in addition to sharing her love of music with the Handbell Choir, Youth Band, Youth Choir and Brass Quintet.

Emma Lee is a Hersey High School graduate who will attend the University of Illinois - Urbana/Champaign to study biomedical engineering. Emma wants to be a biomedical engineer to make a positive change in the world around her. She would specifically like to be a part of the cutting-edge research that focuses on creating cell cultures of cancerous cells to get a deeper understanding of the disease. Emma was a member of both the track and cross-country team for four years, and was the varsity and senior captain. She was also involved with the Varsity Scholastic Bowl, Science Olympiad, Student Council, Special Olympics and the Chicago Brain Bee Society for Neuroscience Competition. Emma had a part-time job during school and never once called in sick, often filling in for others when needed.

Adrian Perez is a Prospect High School graduate who will attend the University of Illinois - Urbana/Champaign to study civil engineering. Adrian wants to help rebuild the infrastructure in impoverished neighborhoods to give those kids the same resources he has been lucky to have. What Adrian admires most about civil engineering is not the job itself, but the fact that his work would give others the opportunity to achieve their dreams. Adrian has received many awards - National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, AP Scholar with Honor Award and the University of Illinois Salute to Achievement Award. He was a varsity baseball player and a children's baseball camp instructor. Adrian was also a member of Prospect's Service Club and Frisbee Club and kept busy as a LINK Leader and high school tutor. One of Adrian's teachers said he is one of Prospect High School's best!

Awarding scholarships to high school seniors each spring is just one of the many philanthropic activities of the Mount Prospect Woman's Club. The club is actively seeking new members who are interested in becoming a part of a philanthropic organization dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service. Serving the Mount Prospect community since its establishment in 1927, the club is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. Club meetings are held at noon on the first Tuesday of the month at the Mount Prospect Village Hall and residence in Mount Prospect is not a requirement for membership. Contact President Jodi Hanson at mountprospectwc@yahoo.com for more information about the scholarship program or membership in the club.
