Learn about electric bikes at club's next meeting

The McHenry County Bicycle Club will hold its next general meeting Wednesday, Aug. 23. The guest presenter will be Jim Roden, owner of Becky's Bikes in Ridgefield, who will discuss electric bikes. Check out their inventory of electric bikes at www.BeckysBikes.com.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the McHenry Township Senior Center, 3703 N. Richmond Road in Johnsburg.

The McHenry County Bicycle Club was established in 1981. Although its focus is on cycling, it has evolved into an organization that enjoys seasonal activities year-round.

They welcome all riders, from beginners to experienced touring cyclists. The easy riders prefer shorter routes at a leisurely pace. The intermediate cyclists pedal at a moderate pace over distances of 20 to 40 miles, while the fast-paced group hammers it home at more aggressive speeds and mileage.

During the riding season, road and trail rides are scheduled on weekends and/or weekday mornings and evenings.

Most rides include stops for food or ice cream.

Seasonal activities also include monthly camping outings, May through October, with an emphasis on bicycling the area's rural roads. Non-cycling members explore local shops and nearby hiking trails.

With the arrival of colder weather, club members hike, snowshoe and cross-country ski in an attempt to stay fit during the "off" season.

In June this year, the club also hosted its 35th annual Udder Century ride along flat to rolling rural routes of 31, 50, 63, 76 and 100 miles through the dairy lands of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
