Elgin Donor Club to host book review Sept. 28

The Donor Club of Elgin will be sponsoring a Book Review and Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Elgin Country Club.

This event will begin with the luncheon at noon, followed by the program. Also at the Book Review event, there are sales of homemade cookies, breads, and candies as well as sales of gently used books and raffle baskets.

Jenny Riddle, a renowned dramatic book reviewer, will be presenting a review of the book "Ray and Joan: The Man Who Made the McDonald's Fortune and The Woman Who Gave It All Away" by Lisa Napoli.

Tickets are $30 and may be purchased from club members. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

The Donor Club was founded in 1913, adopting the motto that remains today: "Our duty is to be useful, not according to our desires but according to our powers." In 1920, the club founded the day nursery which is now the Elgin Day Care Center. Throughout the years, the Donor Club has funded eye glasses for needy children, worked on Red Cross surgical dressings, published cookbooks, and gave monies to the Easter Seal Center to start their clinic. The Club has made donations to the veterans hospitals, the Salvation Army, Community Crisis Center, Elgin Interfaith Food Pantry, the Courier-News Shoe Fund, and the South Elgin playground that focuses on the handicap. It also continues to support the Elgin Day Care Center.

Susan Pepa and Karen Heimberg are co-chairs of the book review and luncheon event. The club president is Judy Emmert. For questions, contact Mary at (847) 742-6978.
