Book Discussions Cover Many Genres at Schaumburg Library

Free book and movie discussion groups at the Schaumburg Library that took a summer hiatus will soon start up again. From romantic novels to true crime, books discussed in the groups cover a variety of genres. New members are always welcome to participate in any of the groups listed below.

Anyone who enjoys true crime stories may want to join "An Hour to Kill" from 7-8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 24, in the Rasmussen South Room of the Central Library, 130 S. Roselle Rd., Schaumburg. This new, quarterly true crime book discussion group will kick off with The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective, by Kate Summerscale. Limited loaner copies are available upon registration at the Information Desk on the library's second floor.

Movie buffs are welcome to attend Dann and Raymond's Movie Club from 7:30-9:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 7 in the Central Library's Rasmussen North Room. Daily Herald Film Critic Dann Gire and author Raymond Benson will show clips and discuss great female directors. No registration is required.

Adults who enjoy young adult novels are invited to the Young(ish) Adult Book Club from 1-2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 10 at Wally's Coffeehouse, 55 W. Schaumburg Rd., Schaumburg. September's selection is Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. Limited loaner copies are available upon registration at the Fiction Desk on the library's first floor.

Those who speak and read in Polish may want to meet fellow Polish book enthusiasts in the Polish Book Discussion from 7:30-9 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13 in the Rasmussen South Room of the Central Library. Sign up at the Information Desk on the library's second floor to be contacted by a moderator who will arrange for books to be distributed.

Many people enjoy watching movies based on books. For them, the library offers Who Filmed this Book? From 6:30-9 p.m., Wednesdays, Sept. 13 and 27 at the Hanover Park Branch, 1266 Irving Park Rd. Members of this group read the selected book, watch the movie based on that title, and discuss both. September's book will be Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson, which inspired the movie, Somewhere in Time. Limited loaner copies are available at the Hanover Park Branch.

Members of Beyond the Book have several options of when to meet and which titles to read. The group will meet from 10-11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 19 to discuss The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonassan. Another option is to attend from 7:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 21 to discuss To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The third choice is to meet from 1:30-2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 26 to discuss The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald. Limited loaner copies are available upon registration at the Fiction Desk.
