Fox Valley Aero Club to celebrate National Model Aviation Day Aug. 12

In celebration of National Model Aviation Day, Fox Valley Aero Club is having its fourth annual Cub Day and Nite-Fly on Saturday, Aug. 12.

"This is a great family outing to see a full day of RC Model Airplanes of all sizes," club president Dale Gathman states. "During the day, we are having a Piper Cub fly-in that will include all types and sizes of Piper Cubs, some as large as one-half scale.

"In the evening, there will be a Nite-Fly where the planes are lit with LED lights. It is great fun to see the runway lit with glow sticks and the glowing planes fly in the night sky."

National Model Aviation Day is open to the public at Fox Valley Aero Club. The public is invited to attend a full day of demonstrations of RC Model Airplanes. This event is supported by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, a national organization of 187,000 members and 2,400 AMA clubs.

"The AMA Foundation helps members celebrate the educational value of model aviation, helps educate the role of models in development of aircraft through history, and helps support local community events through club air shows and flight demonstrations," says Tom Flint of the Fox Valley Aero Club.

The Piper Cub RC Model event starts at 9 a.m. and includes noon time flight demonstrations of giant scale yellow Piper Cubs. The Nite-Fly starts at dusk. Admission is free but donations for the AMA Educational Programs will be accepted.

Cliff Fullhart, a longtime member of the Fox Valley Aero Club, explains, "The J3 Piper Cub is celebrating it 80th year as one of Americas most loved and well-known planes. Piper sold over 19,073 of the J3 Cubs. Its bright yellow color makes the plane easy to recognize and even easier to fly as an RC Airplane. The slow flight characteristics of the J3 Cub make it an ideal RC Airplane and we think the public will enjoy seeing so many cubs in the air at the same time during our noon time air show."

The event will be held at the Fox Valley Aero Club's flight field at 3821 Karl Madsen Drive in St. Charles. It is located on Route 38, drive one block west of Peck Road. Karl Madsen Drive is on the left; turn left and follow the signs to the flight field.
