Centegra Health to offer Mammo Mondays

Centegra Health System urges women to stay ahead of breast cancer by receiving regular screening mammograms. To support women in this goal, Centegra offers monthly Mammo Monday events.

The next Mammo Monday is Aug. 14. During the event's new extended hours, attendees can bring their mothers, daughters, sisters and friends to one of three convenient locations to receive mammograms, bone density screenings and free expert bra fittings. Light snacks and special giveaways also will be provided.

The Aug. 14 Mammo Monday event will be held:

• 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Centegra Gavers Breast Center (spa services from Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center Bridge Spa available from 4 to 7 p.m.)

• 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Huntley Medical Office Building 1 Imaging Center (spa services from Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center Bridge Spa available from 4 to 7 p.m.)

• 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Centegra Hospital-McHenry

While a physician order is not necessary for a screening mammogram, it is required for a bone density screening. To schedule an appointment for a screening mammogram or bone density screening on Mammo Monday, call 815-334-5566 or visit centegra.org/breastcenter for more details. Attendees' insurance will be billed for mammograms and bone density screenings. Financial assistance is available. The American Cancer Society recommends by the age of 40 women start talking to their health care provider about a screening mammogram schedule that is right for them. The ACS recommends annual mammograms for women ages 45 to 54 to maintain breast health and as a proven way to detect breast cancer in its earliest stage. The ACS encourages women beginning at age 55 to have mammograms every other year. Although the ACS suggests women who want yearly mammograms continue to do so, it also recommends women check with their health insurance provider to find out if a yearly exam is covered. However, women should talk to their health care providers to determine a screening schedule that is right for them.

According to the CDC, osteoporosis affects one in four women ages 65 and older. Many people do not know that they have osteoporosis until they break a bone. An osteoporosis screening is important to find the disease early before it affects the bones.
