WACO Hosts School Supplies & Alpaca Backpack, How About You Drives

The Woodfield Area Children's Organization is hosting a two-part school supplies drive. From now through Saturday, Aug. 19, the Schaumburg-based nonprofit is working with the community to collect items for the 2017-18 school year.

Collection boxes are available at the following locations: Rooster's Barn & Grill and Walk-In Closet in Bloomingdale; McDonald's (1775 W. Algonquin) in Rolling Meadows; and in Schaumburg: Chick-fil-A (965 E. Golf and 90 Barrington Road), Heartland Bank and Trust, McDonald's (955 E. Golf), Rep. Michelle Mussman's office (15 W. Weathersfield), and Patrick BMW, Mini, Cadillac, Volvo and Hyundai.

All school-related items, such as folders, notebooks, pens, pencils, safety scissors, crayons, glue sticks and highlighters are welcome.

WACO's "Alpaca Backpack, How About You?" program is also underway from now through September. For $13.50, you can purchase a backpack filled with school supplies that WACO will give to a disadvantaged child in the Northwest or Western suburbs. Go to waco4kids.org to donate.

The idea for the new initiative came from Linda McGill, WACO's secretary and part owner of SafeHouse Farm Alpacas in Barrington. This year some of the animals will be on WACO's float in Schaumburg's Labor Day parade.

"We serve more than 1,500 impoverished youngsters in the Northwest and Western suburbs," says McGill. "So we thought a two-step drive was the best way to help as many of them as possible," she adds.
