Learn about dragonflies and damselflies: 'Triassic Park' survivors

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County will offer its next Learn from the Experts program with "Dragonflies and Damselflies: 'Triassic Park' Survivors."

It will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 26, at Creek Bend Nature Center, which is located in the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles. The fee is $10 per person.

Learn how to identify native dragonflies and damselflies and attract them to your local pond or wetland.

During this two-hour workshop presented by environmental biologist Cathy White, you'll learn about these amazing creatures and then get the chance to examine them in their native habitat while you explore the nearby aquatic systems.

Bring an insect net, if you have one.

Advance registration is required. For information or registration, call (630) 444-3190 or email programs@kaneforest.com.

On Sunday, Sept. 24, the Learn from the Expert will be "A Sense of Place: Burlington Prairie." It will be 1-2:30 p.m. at Burlington Prairie Forest Preserve, 13N240 Engel Road in Burlington.

Grasses and wildflowers carpet the landscape of Burlington Prairie. A portion of the preserve is virgin prairie, where the ground has never been broken by a plow. Learn about the natural and cultural history of this special place with senior ranger Mandy Morgan and nature programs manager Valerie Blaine. As you walk along the trail, they will discuss changes from the postglacial landscape through modern times. Participants will take lots of time to identify wildflowers, insects and birds in this one-of-a-kind nature preserve. The fee is $10 per person.
