Rep. Sauer Sponsored Legislation to Stop Lawmaker Pay Hike Signed by Governor

SPRINGFIELD - This week, Governor Bruce Rauner signed legislation, House Bill 643, sponsored by State Representative Nick Sauer (R-Lake Barrington) to prevent a pay and per diem increase for state elected officials.

"Illinois should be focused on reforming our government and advancing pro-growth policies that improve our economy, not giving elected officials a pay increase," said Sauer. "Our neighboring state of Wisconsin just announced another major investment that will create jobs and opportunity for thousands of residents. Our focus should be on doing the same here in Illinois and ensuring every child receives a quality education, so I appreciate the Governor signing House Bill 643 and putting Illinoisans ahead of the wallets of politicians."

Years ago, an annual cost of living adjustment for Illinois' state elected and appointed officials was put into law. House Bill 643 prevents this annual increase from taking effect and also prevents an increase in the mileage rate and allowance for lodging and meals.

Sauer noted that Illinois lawmakers are already among the best compensated in the nation and the state needs to focus on dealing with its long standing financial problems first and foremost.
