Literacy Organization Looking For Volunteer Tutors This Fall

"I'm pleased to give back to my community, and to know I'm helping someone to improve their life."

This is one of the many similar sentiments from volunteer tutors with District 214's Read to Learn Literacy/Volunteer Program - an organization in its 32nd year servicing Chicago's Northwest suburbs.

Read to Learn will begin its fall semester this September at nine community locations. The program is currently looking for volunteer tutors willing to make a 10 week commitment (length of semester) for approximately 2.5 hours per week. Each week, volunteers meet with an adult learner they are paired with to help improve the learner's English language skills. All lesson plans and materials are provided. While students cite their appreciation at the end of every semester for their tutor's' time and commitment, many volunteer tutors have indicated gaining a tremendous value from the weekly one-on-one tutor sessions.

As one tutor puts it, "I have learned as much from my students as they have learned from me."
