Hack the Jack introduces pumpkin carving contest

This October, the Naperville Jaycees are presenting Hack the Jack, the area's first pumpkin-carving contest.

Hack the Jack will give contestants the chance to compete for cash prizes for finishing in first, second and third place. The more people who enter to compete and vote, the larger the cash pot grows.

From Friday to Sunday, Oct. 20 to 22, Naper Settlement will display pumpkins submitted for the contest and voting will begin. Pumpkins receiving first-, second- and third-place votes win a cash prize, and those who vote for the pumpkins will be entered in a raffle for a cash prize as well.

"As a community group focused on bringing people and organizations together, we thought this kind of friendly competition would be a natural fit, and fun for both participants and voters," event Chairman Bill Donofrio said. "We're hoping that participants will 'think big' when it comes to ideas and themes for their pumpkin."

The pumpkin-carving competition is open to all ages. The submission price is $15 and all pumpkins must be submitted between 4:30 and 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, in the parking lot behind the Martin Mitchell building at Naper Settlement. Proceeds from the event will benefit various Naperville nonprofits.

"This is a going to be a great event for both adults and kids," Donofrio said. "Naper Settlement is the best location for this, and has been really generous by allowing us to join in the fun of All Hallow's Eve."

All Hallow's Eve is Naper Settlement's annual Halloween event taking place at the same time. Visit napersettlement.org for information.

Tickets for Hack the Jack voting can be purchased online at naperjaycees.org/hackthejack or at the event. Tickets are $5 each and give the voter three chances to win. Bulk ticketing is also available. Winners will be announced at Naperville Plaza on Oct. 28.
