Local coalition to host second annual Big Latch-On

The Kane County Breastfeeding Coalition will host its second annual Big Latch-On event. It will be sponsored at two locations in the Fox Valley on two separate dates. On Friday Aug. 4, the Big Latch-On will be hosted at the VNA Health Center in Aurora. On Saturday Aug. 5, the event will be hosted at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

The Big Latch On is a global event with which individual groups register to host their own version of the celebration. This event is for breastfeeding mothers, pregnant women, breastfeeding supporters, and families to come together and celebrate breastfeeding. Together, they hope to promote and support breastfeeding as a positive infant feeding choice within our community, and around the world. The most exciting part of the event occurs when at the same moment all around the world, children can latch on to their breastfeeding mothers in solidarity.

The Big Latch-On was started in 2005 in New Zealand. Since then, it has spread all over the globe, and hundreds of locations participate every year. With those hundreds of locations, thousands of children and mothers participate in latching on. The numbers continue to grow every year, and the support for breastfeeding continues to rise.

Attend at one of the locations to join in the celebration of the natural wonder that is breastfeeding. Events include free food and activities, as well as opportunities to learn about educational resources. Overall, the event aims to bring together a community of breastfeeding supporters, and help normalize breastfeeding as an infant feeding choice.

The Aurora site will be at VNA Health Care, 400 N. Highland Ave. from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4. To RSVP, contact Maria at (630) 892-4355, ext. 8158.

The Elgin site will be at Advocate Sherman Hospital, 1425 N. Randall Road, from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 5. To RSVP, contact to Cindy at cla@wans.net.
