Young artists to sing Broadway favorites with Soiree Lyrique

Soirée Lyrique's Young Artist Program will conclude five weeks of vocal and theatrical training with two productions.

The concerts will feature 17 singers and will finalize the winners of Soirée Lyrique's first vocal competition with cash awards.

"A Broadway Show," an outdoor concert (Ravinia style) will be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 16, on the Terrace of Snuffy's Villa, 17N405 Oak Ave., West Dundee. Excerpts from "Les Misérables," "Phantom of the Opera," "The Music Man," "West Side Story," "My Fair Lady," "South Pacific," "Show-Boat" and more will be presented and the semifinalists to the Vocal Competition will compete to be selected for the final round.

Bring your own lawn chair and picnic and enjoy the three acres of rolling landscape or make a reservation for the seated area. A free golf cart ride from your car to the performing area will be provided.

In case of rain, the performance will be moved to the Music Room of Snuffy's Villa. Reservations will secure your seat in the Music Room in case of rain.

"Opera Scenes" and the final round of the Vocal Competition will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 23, at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 1565 Larkin Ave. in Elgin. Highlights from operas such as "Nabucco," "Marriage of Figaro," "A Masked Ball, Mefistofele," "L'Italiana in Algeri," "Gianni Schicchi," "Porgy & Bess," "Die Fledermaus," "L'Italiana in Algeri," "La Traviata," "The Tales of Hoffman" and more will be presented.

The results of the competition and the cash awards will be distributed following a short social time and refreshments in the gathering room.

Semifinalists in the competition are as follows:

• Division I - Twinkling Stars, 12 years and younger, Isabella Malacsina of Elgin and Julia Smitendorf or Lake in the Hills

Division II - Starbursts, ages 13 to 18, Blake Buczkiewicz of Huntley, Jessica Farfan of Gilberts and Isabella B. Nicoli of Elmhurst

• Division III - Shooting Stars, ages 19 to 16, Samantha Baran of Algonquin

• Division IV - Everlasting Stars, 27 years and older, Sarah Linske of Chicago, Jim Hinton of Elgin, Ronald Spriggs of Chicago and Karen Archbold of Glen Ellyn

Additional participants in the YAP include Federico Caballero of Chicago, Cody Davis of Aurora, Rebekah Haynes of East Dundee, Megan Marie Martinez of Huntley, Valerie Meachum of Elgin, and Lauren Parnell of Elburn.

All winners will be invited to a private audition for Chamber Opera Chicago in late August.

Accompanists for these events will feature pianist Rosemary Schroeder of St. Charles, who received her doctoral fellowship in Opera Directing, Organ, Conducting, and Church Music from Northwestern Graduate School of Music, and Dr. Chiayi Lee of Batavia, currently the adjunct piano faculty and staff accompanist at Harper College.

Lee is staff pianist for Soirée Lyrique and also played for Elgin OPERA, DuPage Opera Theatre and Interactive Opera Company.
