Program showcases fireflies in Schaumburg July 8

Firefly Fandango is set for 8:45 to 9:45 p.m. Saturday, July 8 at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg.

Families are invited to take a twilight wagon ride to view the firefly light show as the sun sets on Spring Valley.

Other activities include a short discussion about fireflies and how they produce light.

Although it's possible to see a few fireflies in suburban backyards, Spring Valley Education Coordinator Mary Rice said it's rare to see so many at once other than in natural settings such as Spring Valley.

"Their habitats are gone," Rice said. "They need the tall grasses and open space areas to live."

The cost is $4 per person for residents and $5 for nonresidents. Registration is required.
