Sisters of the Living Word to celebrate six Jubilees Saturday in Palatine

Six members of the community of the Sisters of the Living Word are preparing to celebrate Jubilee anniversaries. A special mass honoring the Jubilarians will be held Saturday, July 1, at St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic Church in Palatine.

• Genevieve Shea will celebrate her 80th anniversary. Originally from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, she has ministered in many states here in the U.S. She was a teacher at St. Aloysius Elementary in Chicago from 1939 to 1944, a teacher at St. Raphael Elementary in New Orleans from 1950 to 1955, and a Chaplain at Samaritan Health Center in Detroit from 1979 to 1986. Most recently, she was an Archivist at the Living Word Center in Chicago and continues to write for the magazine OutWord. She resides now at Resurrection Life Center.

• Joanne Fedewa will celebrate her 70th anniversary. A native of Riley Township, Michigan, she has taught at parochial schools in New Ulm, Minnesota; Chicago; Gretna, Louisiana; Detroit; and North Little Rock, Arkansas. Over the years she has served as a Novice Directress at parishes in New Jersey, Illinois and Michigan. For 25 years, Sister Joanne served as Pastoral Coordinator at Christ the King Parish in Flint, Michigan. Currently she resides in Palatine, and is a volunteer minister at St. Joseph Home for the Elderly.

• John Boegeman will also celebrate her 70th anniversary. A native of Chaska Township, she has taught in elementary schools in St. Louis; Chicago; Sioux City, Iowa; Metairie, Louisiana, and Detroit. Most recently she was art teacher for Mallinckrodt College in Wilmette. Sister John also excelled at wood craft and has sold her artwork throughout the years. She currently resides in Shakopee, Minnesota, where she is retired but continuing to minister to those around her.

• Elaine Tworek is originally from Walker Township, Nebraska, and is celebrating her 60th anniversary. She was a teacher from 1965 to 1973 and principal from 1980 to 1988, at Resurrection High School in Chicago, and teacher at St. Joseph High School in Westchester from 1988 to 1994. She most recently she served at St. Mary's Parish, Lower Brule, South Dakota, where she worked on a Native American reservation. She now resides at Resurrection Life Center.

• Julia Stump is celebrating her 60th anniversary. She is originally from Pewamo, Michigan, and currently resides in Metairie, Louisiana. She has spent her whole life teaching in parochial schools. She taught at St. Henry Elementary, New Orleans, from 1956 to 1964. Then in 1965, she and another sister founded St. Edward the Confessor school, Metairie, Louisiana. She continues to teach part time at St. Edward.

• Carrie Miller, celebrating her 50th anniversary, is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. From 1977-1982 she taught and was a youth counselor in the Diocese of Amarillo, Texas. She served as the Coordinator of Family Life Ministry and as a Pastoral Associate for St. Edna Parish in Mount Prospect. Presently she is co-founder and Program Manager of Faith Community Homes, an ecumenically initiated and supported organization that assists employed low-income families. She resides in Palatine.
