LifeSource to make $1 donation to Support Our Troops for every donor

They gave so much of themselves for our freedom. Now it's time to donate in their honor.

This Independence Day, LifeSource is encouraging donors and communities throughout the area Chicago to honor our nation's veterans with a lifesaving blood donation. One donation can save three lives.

Between June 30 and July 9, all donors who visit any one of 17 LifeSource Community Donor Centers or blood drive will receive a limited-edition patriotic T-shirt.

Additionally, LifeSource will make a $1 donation per donor to Operation Support Our Troops, a Naperville-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting the well-being of American troops and veterans.

Summer is a slow time for blood donation and LifeSource, and centers across the nation, are feeling it.

"Every two seconds, someone needs blood and that does not cease over the summer months," explains LifeSource Executive Director Eva Quinley. "Donations are needed now to help us keep our shelves stocked in order to serve patients in Chicagoland."

Local Community Donor Centers are located in: Arlington Heights: 25 W. Rand Road, Arlington Annex Shopping Center; Crystal Lake: 5150 Northwest Hwy.; Glenview: 2510 Waukegan Road; Gurnee: 5250-1 Grand Ave.; Lake Bluff: 223 Waukegan Road, Carriage Way Plaza; Naperville: 2764 Aurora Ave.; Schaumburg: 211 W. Golf Road; Villa Park: 100 E. Roosevelt Road, Suite 40-41; and Westmont: 1133 Fairview Ave.

Through Aug. 15, teen donors (18, or 16 and 17 with a signed parental consent form) are encouraged to donate at any Community Donor Center. Donors will receive a coupon for a free pint of Culver's custard. High school donors are encouraged to continue giving the gift of life throughout the summer.

Appointments are suggested but walk-ins are always welcome. To make an appointment, call (877) 543-3768 or visit www.lifesource.org.

In preparation for their donation, donors are asked to eat well, stay hydrated and arrive with proper identification. The donation appointment takes about an hour (with the donation itself only around ten minutes) and is both safe and comfortable. Donors must be at least 18 years old (16 and 17 years of age with parental consent).

Proper ID is required to donate blood. A LifeSource or military ID, driver's license or employee badge with a picture and full name are all approved forms of ID. A birth certificate along with a picture ID that includes the donor's full name will also be accepted.
