South Elgin Parks offers summer fun with camps and other activities

Six Flags tickets:

The South Elgin Parks & Recreation Discounts Days is here! From July 1-9, tickets are only $40! Tickets are valid only during the above days for a single-day visit. Purchases are only available at village hall, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call (847) 622-0003.

Fourth of July Parade:

Show your red, white and blue at the Fourth of July Parade at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 4. The parade begins at Wedgewood Drive and ends at Route 31. Operation Warrior Wishes will once again be the grand marshal. Bring out nonperishable food items for the South Elgin Food Pantry. Items will be picked up 20 minutes prior to parade start or you can leave them on the curb and they will be picked up after parade.

Fishing With the Fire Chief:

Come out to East Avenue Park, 325 East Ave. for a day of fishing from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 6. South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District Chief Bill Sohn and Assistant Chief Steve Wascher will answer questions about fire or fish. Be sure to bring a fishing pole; bait will be provided. Parents should remain on-site with their child. The resident fee is $1 and $2 for nonresidents. Registration is required. The fee for residents is $1 and the fee for nonresidents is $2.

Mini-Hawk Multi-Sports Camp:

This multisport program for age 4 to 7 was developed to give children a positive first step into athletics. The essentials of baseball, basketball and soccer are taught in a safe, structured environment with lots of encouragement and a big focus on fun. The Mini-Hawk games and activities were designed to allow campers to explore balance, movement, hand/eye coordination, and skill development at their own pace. Skyhawks staff are trained to handle the specific needs of young athletes. This camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Monday-Friday, July 10-14, at Jim Hansen Park, 338 Valley Forge Ave. The cost is $129 for residents and $139 for nonresidents.

Water Works:

Kids age 5-14 can enjoy a morning of water galore. There will be a water slide, water balloons, foam balls, squirt guns and buckets 'o water. A snack will be offered for all in attendance. Bring a water bottle and remember to wear sunscreen. Registration deadline is July 12 and registration is required. Water Works will be held from 10 a.m. to noon July 21 at Stowell-Peddy Park, 453 Redington Drive. There is a $1 registration fee.

Martial arts:

Martial arts classes from everyone from 4 years old through adult are offered with National Karate. Classes begin the week of July 9 so register now. For more information, visit southelgin.com/recreation.

Little Learners:

This class is for children who need a way to keep what they have learned in preschool or for those who have not yet started school. Participants will work on letter sounds, writing upper and lowercase, numbers and more. All needs can be met, from name recognition, learning to be in a classroom setting to working on improving those skills to be prepared for the upcoming school year. Please bring a snack and water each day. This class will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays from July 12 through Aug. 2 at the Municipal Annex. The cost is $40 for residents and $48 for nonresidents.

Zumba Kids Jr.:

A class for boys and girls, age 4 to 6, packed with kid-friendly routines. They break down steps, add games, activities and cultural exploration elements into the class structure. Class helps develop a healthy lifestyle and incorporate key childhood development elements such as leadership, respect, team work, confidence, self-esteem, memory, creativity, coordination, balance, and cultural awareness. This class will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, July 11 to Aug. 1, at the Municipal Annex. The cost is $40 for residents and $48 for nonresidents.

Zumba Kids:

The class for age 7-11 offers feature kid-friendly routines. They break down the steps, add games, activities and cultural exploration elements into the class structure. Helps develop a healthy lifestyle and incorporate fitness as a natural part of children's lives by making fitness fun. Classes incorporate key childhood development elements like leadership, respect, team work, confidence, self-esteem, memory, creativity, coordination, and cultural awareness. This class will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays, July 6-27, at the Municipal Annex. The cost is $40 for residents and $48 for nonresidents.

Cardio-Kickboxing:

This class is a fun, full body workout that will get you kicking and punching pads with motivating music. You will learn how to hit pads with boxing techniques like jabs, punches and upper cuts as well as learn how to use the largest muscles in your body, your legs, to really kick yourself into shape! This class is taught by an expert instructor from National Karate & Kickboxing. This class will be held from 6:50 to 7:50 p.m. July 12-Sept. 15 at the Municipal Annex. The cost is $70 for residents and $80 for nonresidents.
