St. Raymond athletics program raises funds for charitable causes

The collective work of St. Raymond Parish School parent volunteers and student-athletes enabled their athletics program to raise approximately $8,000 for charitable causes during the 2016-2017 calendar year.

The school's Volley for The Cure volleyball event, held in October last year and led by Carolyn Mueller, raised nearly $2,500, which was donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The Joey Sykes Boys' Basketball Tournament, held in January and led by Bill Cantieri and Tom Meyer, raised nearly $4,000, which was donated to Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

Finally, the Matthew Lewnard Intramural Volleyball Tournament, held in May and led by Ann Cantieri, raised more than $1,600, which will be donated to Lurie Children's Hospital.

"The monies that the St. Raymond School Athletic program has raised over the past year for charity represent a tremendous outpouring of support from our school community," said Bill McKenna, St. Raymond Athletic Association co-chairperson, at the school's recent athletic banquet.

"Helping those in need is at the heart of what being a St. Raymond Saint is all about. We are proud of all that our students and their parents have been able to accomplish."

The Joey Sykes and Matthew Lewnard tournaments were named after young boys who passed away while attending school at St. Raymond.
