DuPage Symphony to celebrate 64th season

"Notable Pairings," the DuPage Symphony Orchestra's 2017-18 concert series, celebrates the orchestra's 64th season with combinations of music and soloists.

The 100-member symphony orchestra is in residence at North Central College in Naperville and performs at the school's Wentz Concert Hall.

The five-concert subscription series will include classics such as Beethoven's "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G-major," featuring award-winning pianist Daniel Hsu; "Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major" by Carl Maria von Weber, with soloist Yoonah Kim; and the sweepingly melodic Brahms "Double Concerto in A-minor for Violin and Cello," which will bring center stage the father-and-son duo Stefan and Alexander Hersh of Chicago.

The season finale will celebrate the 100th anniversary year of composer Leonard Bernstein in a concert pairing the DSO with the North Central College Concert Choir and Women's Chorale in a performance of "Chichester Psalms."

"I am excited to offer such a distinctive array of great orchestral repertoire to our listeners next season," said Music Director and Conductor Barbara Schubert.

"Each concert pairs a familiar masterpiece with something a little bit unusual; such as Carl Nielsen's captivating 'Four Temperaments,' Randall Thompson's gloriously melodic 'Symphony No. 2' and Ottorino Respighi's colorful 'Roman Festivals.'"

In addition to the subscription series, the DSO will continue to offer its popular Family Concerts, celebrating Halloween with the program "Magic and Spells" Oct. 29, featuring orchestra musicians in costume and a side-by-side performance with musicians from the Naperville Youth Symphony.

For the holiday season, the DSO shares "Yuletide Joy" Dec. 10 that includes visits from both Santa and Olaf from Disney's "Frozen."

The DSO also offers a variety of community and educational programs, including free chamber music concerts at Naperville's 95th Street Library; Tiny Great Performances at the DuPage Children's Museum in Naperville; and the new Preludes and Interludes program introduced last year featuring talented student ensembles from area schools who entertain audiences before concerts and during intermission.

Subscriptions for the five-concert series, which offer a 20 percent savings over single ticket prices, are available through Aug. 15.

Subscription orders also bring the added benefit of preseason access to the always sold-out Halloween and Holiday Family Concerts.
