Geneva bookstore hosts Dad-themed story time

Just in time for Father's Day, you can grab your dads and head to the Barnes and Noble along the Randall Road corridor in Geneva for a special dad-themed story time.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, the store in the Geneva Commons mall will feature the 2012 book "When Dads Don't Grow Up." The book tells the story of four father-child pairs as they spend happy and silly times together doing things such as popping Bubble Wrap, watching cartoons and having shopping cart races.

The dads are kids at heart, even though they look like grown ups on the outside.

After hearing the story, kids and their dads can partake in activities at the Barnes and Noble that go along with the story time theme.

The event is free. The store is at 102 Commons Drive. For information, call (630) 262-8568.

While at the Barnes and Noble for story time, or actually any time this summer, you can stop by and pick up a reading journal to encourage your kids to read.

The Geneva store is taking part in a nationwide Barnes and Noble reading program.

As part of the program, kids must read any eight books of their choosing and record them in their journal. They then can also write which book is their favorite and why.

The young readers can choose from any category of books, though they are encourages to try different genres.

If they bring their completed book back to the store by Sept. 15, they will get a free reading adventure book.

Summer with the locals:

All but one band is in place for the upcoming summer concert series at Algonquin Commons - and your votes helped them get there.

The mall along the Randall Road corridor hosted a Play Live Rock and & Shop contest, which allowed local musicians to compete for the chance to appear on stage at the mall during its annual summer concert series.

Groups submitted their demo tapes to the mall's Facebook page, and you voted for your favorites.

The winners now will get to perform live one weekend in July at the mall. Each also wins $500 for the performance.

The top 20 bands with the most likes were interviewed by a committee and then the following bands were chosen, said Kim Gilmore of Gilmore Creative Marketing, which does public relations for the mall.

The performances, which start at 3 p.m., will begin Saturday, July 8, with FlashDrive playing Top 40 rock, pop, funk, alternative and modern country hits.

Invictus will play punk and pop punk July 9.

Josh LaSota, an indie rocker, will play July 15. The performer for July 16 still needs to be booked.

On July 22, OUTDregjas, a rock n' roll band, will perform. Counter Theory, an alternative band, will take the stage July 23.

On July 29, you can hear Chachuba, which plays electronic, trance-fusion and jam.

The performances finish up with New Age Renegades July 30, playing original music and rock & roll covers.

The contest allows the bands to get a bigger following and play to a bigger crowd, Gilmore said.

The concert series draws hundreds each weekend as families gather outside to listen to the music and enjoy the summer weather.
