Art Driving Local Climate Action at Brushwood Center

RIVERWOODS, IL - Brushwood Center brings climate action and the arts together for a unique program entitled Environmental Graphiti™. On Sunday, June 11, Brushwood Center invites the public to join in a discussion with artist, Alisa Singer and Field Museum Climate Change Ecologist, Dr. Katherine Moore Powell to examine the intersection of art and science at the exhibition opening reception of Environmental Graphiti™ at the Brushwood Gallery from 1pm to 3pm. Catherine Game, Brushwood Center's Interim Executive Director, says, "Singer's work inspires us to take urgent action on climate change and Brushwood Center recognizes how critical this action is, now more than ever." Singer's work takes the graphs, charts, maps, words, and numbers relating to key research about climate change and transforms them into boldly colored works of art.

Environmental Graphiti™ delivers a message about climate change in a unique and powerful way, says Singer, "Art makes the science more accessible. Science makes the art more meaningful. They are a potent combination. Once viewers understand that each piece is derived from a key indicator or fact about climate change, they are intrigued and become more engaged with both the art and the underlying message." Singer founded Environmental Graphiti™ in 2014, after retiring from her career in corporate law. She created The Art of Climate Change, a series of abstract images derived from the science behind the critical changes impacting our planet.

To add depth and dialogue to the art opening, Dr. Katherine Moore Powell's talk, The Faces Behind the Graphs, will explore the people behind the research that supports climate change. Their stories will parallel the story of climate change, and the inspiration for Singer's art.

Environmental Graphiti™ creates a dialogue at the intersection of art, nature, and science-a perfect fit for the gallery at Brushwood Center, where the mission is to promote the importance of nature for nurturing personal and community wellbeing, cultivating creativity, and inspiring learning.

The Environmental Graphiti™ opening reception is Sunday, June 11, 1-3pm. The Faces Behind the Graphs presentation starts at 2pm. Brushwood Center is a non-profit organization and is located at 21850 N. Riverwoods Road, Riverwoods, IL. You can find more information at: www.BrushwoodCenter.org or by calling 224-633-2427
