Residential home improvement grants available for Cook, DuPage and Kane county homeowners

North West Housing Partnership is announcing a new program that enables low-income homeowners to address long overdue home improvement and accessibility issues that affect health and safety.

The program provides qualified homeowners living in Cook, DuPage and Kane counties with up to $25,000 in grants to address home modifications that are performed by professional contractors.

The improvements eligible for this program include (but are not limited to) grab bars, chair lifts, handicap accessible showers, lowering cabinets, lowering countertops, widening doorways, ramps and walk-in showers, in addition to other needs that can be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

"We are very pleased to play a part in ensuring homeowners who are unable to afford these important home improvements have the opportunity to address, them for the safety and well-being of themselves and their family members," said Robyn Sandys, executive director for North West Housing Partnership.

Households must meet income requirements and other eligibility guidelines to qualify for the grants, which are forgivable after five years. A pre-application is also required.

This program is jointly supported by the North West Housing Partnership, Illinois Housing Development Authority Home Accessibility Program, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
