Local foundation awards two U-46 seniors grants for college

The Gamma Xi Chapter Foundation for Educational Pursuits is pleased to announce the selection of two recipients for their recruitment grants. Each recipient will receive $4,750, which will be awarded over her four years of college as long as she remains in education.

The Gamma Xi Chapter Foundation for Educational Pursuits is a 501(c)(3) charity formed by members of the Gamma Xi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, which is an honorary educational society for women educators.

This foundation has provided more than $59,755 in monetary support to young women, residing in the Elgin Area School District U-46 and Community Unit District 300 attendance areas, who are on career paths leading to teacher certification. Since the foundation's first grants in 2010, the foundation has assisted seven high school students in reaching their goals of becoming educators.

This year, two grant recipients were selected.

Streamwood High graduate Arielle Christopher will be majoring in secondary math education. Volunteer work for her community and assisting in her second grade teacher's classroom inspired Arielle to pursue a career in education. “I am passionate about helping students learn and I want to use my college education to inspire young minds to achieve their dreams and give back to my community.”

South Elgin High graduate Hannah Miner plans on majoring in elementary education with a possible English minor.

Hannah's third-grade teacher made her realize the importance of loving what you do. She made learning fun, and Hannah believes that it was her third-grade teacher's influence that made her want to become a teacher. “I continue on my journey to college in the hopes of being like her one day; a teacher, inspiring her students everyday and pursuing that growing connection that binds student and teachers; a connection that can impact lives.”

Monies for these grant opportunities are received from the EFS Foundation, bequests, memorials and/or honorariums from local donors, and various individual supporters.
