Hanover Township asks for school supplies, backpacks

Hanover Township is gearing up for its annual Backpack Giveaway and is once again asking the community for donations of school supplies and backpacks for township youth returning to school in the fall.

Most needed items include backpacks, notebooks, loose leaf paper, pencils, markers, crayons, scissors, flash drives, blue pens and glue sticks. Donations of gift cards to use for the purchase of school supply items are appreciated, as well as any donation of supplies.

Last year, more than 1,200 backpacks filled with school supplies were given to township youth.

Supplies can be dropped off at the following township locations: Town Hall, 250 S. Route 59 in Bartlett; Hanover Township Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59 in Bartlett; Hanover Township Astor Avenue Community Center, 7431 Astor Ave., in Hanover Park; and Hanover Township Izaak Walton Center, 899 Jay St., in Elgin.

This year's Backpack Giveaway is set for Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Hanover Township Astor Avenue Community Center, 7431 Astor Ave., in Hanover Park, beginning at 9 a.m. Township youth can receive a free backpack filled with school supplies. Proof of residency is required, with a limit of one backpack per child.
