Aurora students tie blankets for needy kids

Seventh-grade students at Fischer Middle School in Aurora spent many of their advisory periods on a service project for a good cause.

The students gathered every Wednesday for much of the year to knot together fleece tie blankets for Project Linus, a national nonprofit organization that provides new, handmade blankets - and the love, security, warmth and comfort they bring - to children who are seriously ill or traumatized. The organization has donated 6.3 million blankets since 1995.

The Parent Teacher Student Association at Fischer gave a donation, which allowed teachers to buy a cart full of fleece from Joanne Fabrics for students to turn into blankets.

This year marked the second time Fischer has gotten involved with Project Linus in what teacher Mary Kay Gleason calls "a loving and fun service opportunity."
