Kris Buckley Outstanding Economic Educator
Mrs. Kristine Buckley of Saint Gilbert Catholic School in Grayslake has been recognized as an Outstanding Economic Educator by Econ Illinois. The award is given for incorporating economics and personal finance education into their curriculum, successfully educating students to be life-long decision makers and empowering youth to make wise decisions about school, career paths, and finances.
Award-winning teachers are selected based on their participation and accomplishments, professional leadership in the field, professional goals and growth as well as student achievement or growth as evidenced by the teacher's work. Econ Illinois recognizes extraordinary teachers for their hard work and tireless effort in educating students on economics and financial literacy.
Mrs. Buckley works as a Junior High Social Studies teacher at Saint Gilbert School where she has taught for 16 years. She is working on a Master's in Curriculum Development, she has three children, a myriad of pets and enjoys traveling, gardening and reading. Mrs. Buckley states that "Students are interested in money just like the rest of us, teaching financial literacy is very important in today's society; as students go on in their education they will be making many more financial decisions, such as what college to attend and they will need to pay attention to the costs. As workers of the future, they will be more responsible for budgeting, saving, and investing for their own future more than ever before." Mrs. Buckley began teaching economics and personal finance when she discovered that her students were not aware of basic economic concepts and wanted to prepare them for future challenges in their careers. Today, she incorporates many activities that Econ Illinois offers such as the Stock Market Game® and InvestWrite. By integrating real world economics into her teaching, she has helped make past events like the Great Depression and WWII more pertinent to today's world.
