Kirk Players closes 51st season with 'I Remember Mama'

Kirk Players has announced the final show of its 51st season: "I Remember Mama," by John Van Druten, based on Kathryn Forbes' novel, "Mama's Bank Account."

The show can be seen at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 9 and 10, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 10 and 11, at Mundelein High School Theatre, 1350 W. Hawley St., Mundelein.

The story shows how Mama, played by Gretchen Grassl, with help from her husband, Papa, played by Randy Margison, and Uncle Chris, played by Dominick Basso, brings up her children in their modest San Francisco home during the early years of the 20th century. The children's' upbringing is filled with humorous and touching episodes, enriched with the sometimes challenging presence of Mama's sisters, Jenny, played by Betty Slack; Trina, played by Kat Basso; and Sigrid, played by Amy Sharer.

"Our audiences will be reminded how much immigrants of the early 20th century helped create the best parts of the fabric of America that we have today," said Jon L Lynn, artistic director of the troupe and the show's director. "The most important thing the play centers on is Mama and her unconditional love for her family. The entire family shares this joyful love and, in turn, makes sacrifices to help each other out. With their high moral values, strong work ethic, focus on family, love of simple pleasures, this play reminds the modern audience of some things that may need a little freshening up in today's world."

"And this show will be enjoyed by all ages," Lynn said. "There is much to laugh at, even in the more serious scenes."

The story is told by the eldest daughter, Katrin, played by Maya Sarkis. With her siblings, Nels, played by Thomas Ferro; Christine, played by Kimberly Barr; and young Dagmar, played by Shannon Ouimet, the children keep the family in constant pleasant turmoil.

Lynn is supported by assistant director Jenny Tomlin, stage manager Beverly Johnson, technical director Jeff Harding, and assistant stage manager Jess Motyka.

Technical expertise is provided by Brenda Sparks and Jeff Harding, set design; Chuck Fitz-Hugh, lighting design; Marilee C.C. Rusiniak, sound design; Fran Hansen, properties design; and guest Peggy Van Engelenhoven and family, costume design.
