ECC to host high school equivalency ceremony May 19; spring commencement May 20

Elgin Community College will hold two commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 20, for the spring 2017 graduating class. Both ceremonies will be held in the Building J Events Center at the college, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

A ceremony for career and technical programs (associate of applied science degrees, vocational specialist certificates, and basic vocational specialist certificates) will be held at 10 a.m. Chef Patrick Stewart, assistant professor of culinary arts and hospitality and the full-time faculty Orrin G. Thompson Teaching Excellence Award winner, will speak at the ceremony.

A ceremony for university transfer degrees (associate in arts, associate in science, associate in fine arts-visual art emphasis, associate in fine arts-music performance emphasis, associate in engineering science, and associate in liberal studies) will be held at 2 p.m.

Soma Chattopadhyay, science unit adjunct and the part-time faculty Orrin G. Thompson Teaching Excellence Award winner, will speak at the ceremony.

Students will be assigned to the graduation ceremony depending on which credential is being earned.

This year's student speakers are April Dutcher for the career and technical programs ceremony and Nicolle Omiotek for the university transfer degree ceremony. The commencement address for both ceremonies will be given by ECC President David Sam, PhD, JD, LLM.

Also, a graduation ceremony honoring recipients of the Illinois High School Equivalency Certificate will be held on Friday, May 19, at 7 p.m. in the Building J Events Center. The student speaker for the high school equivalency ceremony is Ashlei Nordmeyer.

Guests will not need tickets for admission to the ceremonies and there will be open seating. The doors will open one hour prior to each ceremony. The use of noisemakers is prohibited during all ceremonies.
