District 54 appoints new MacArthur principal, new assistant principal

The District 54 School Board made two appointments at its meeting on May 18 for positions in the 2017-18 school year.

Heidy LaFleur - MacArthur Principal

Heidy LaFleur will become the new principal at the MacArthur International Spanish Academy in Hoffman Estates. Heidy has been the principal of North Elementary School in Franklin Park since 2012 and previously worked as an administrator and teacher in Chicago Public Schools.

"Being named the principal at MacArthur International Spanish Academy is an absolute honor," she said. "District 54 has such a strong commitment to ensuring success for every student and I can't wait to be a part of the team."

Heidy has a bachelor's degree in elementary education/early childhood from Drake University and a master's degree in educational leadership from Northeastern Illinois University.

Carol Novak - Churchill and Lincoln Prairie Assistant Principal

Carol Novak will become the assistant principal at Churchill Elementary School and Lincoln Prairie School. Carol has been an English Language Learner teacher at Dirksen School since 2012 and previously taught kindergarten, first and second grade at Dirksen.

"I am honored to work in District 54 where dedication, innovation, current and best practice, but most of all ensuring student success is evident," Novak said. "I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented and inspiring administrators throughout my years at Dirksen. The support of these leaders has helped to shape my educational philosophy and beliefs. I am looking forward to working with the community, students, and staff at Lincoln Prairie and Churchill schools as I embark on this new journey as assistant principal."

Carol has a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Northern Illinois University and master's degrees in curriculum and instruction and school improvement leadership from Olivet Nazarene University.
